Consider some element x to be located in group 2 (alkaline earth metals) on the periodic table...?

the valence shell config. of alkaline earth metals is ns2... While bonding with other elements , it bonds with an oxidation state of +2... this is because it loses the 2 electrons from the valence shell to achieve a noble gas configuration, hence giving a total charge of +2 to the ion..
